SC New Delhi has imposed fine of Rs 1 on (Adv) Prashant bhushan for contempt case.

Supreme Court of india has imposed fine of Rs. 1 on Prashant for two of his tweets, was on Monday let off with a fine of Rs 1 by the Supreme Court of india. |
The bench, comprising Justices Arun Mishra, B R Gavai and Krishna Murari, directed the advocate Prashant Bhushan to deposit the amount by September 15 2020, failing which he will attract a jail term of three months and may be debarment from legal practice for three years.
On 14 August 2020, the bench of Supreme Court of India had held that mr. Bhushan guilty over the 2 tweets made on 29 June of 2020. It heard arguments for sentencing on 20 August 2020 and reserved its judgement on 25 August 2020.
During the arguments, Bhushan submitted a stated to the court that the 'two tweets represented' his 'bonafide beliefs' and that he did not want to apologise for the same.
The supremr court of india, however, gave him time to till 24th August of 2020, to submit unconditional apology.
Attorney General K K Venugopal urged the court not to punish Bhushan, saying he had done a lot of good work in the area of public interest litigations and also public welfare.
The bench of SC met again on 25th August of 2020 to consider the 'effect of the supplementary statement of that contempt case.
Reserving its judgement that day, the bench expressed its anguish at mr. Bhushan's criticism of 'sitting and retired' judges.
The court said while criticism is welcome, one should not 'attribute motives to judges' since they cannot go to the press to defend themselves and 'can only speak through judgements.
